Food Garden Training Day
Swellendam Rotary Club were privileged to enlist the services of the Cape Winelands Biosphere Reserve for a training workshop on creating sustainable food gardens. The day was hosted at St Luke’s church in Railton where a new food garden is being established for the community. 9 members of the community attended the training, 8 from Railton and one from Montagu. The workshop covered practical training where the students prepared and planted the first mixed vegetable bed and also covered subjects such as pest control, irrigation, shade, growing from seed, crop rotation and harvesting. The attendees learnt new planting techniques and all said they had enjoyed the day and learnt a lot. The produce from the garden will be given to those in the community who are struggling to get regular nutritious meals.
We would like to thank Bevan Thomas and the cape Winelands Biosphere reserve for providing an excellent training day. If there are other groups of people in the Swellendam area who would like to start sustainable food gardens, the Swellendam Rotary club would like to hear from you so that we can help.”
